The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has helped launch new M.S. degree programs at 30 institutions with strong graduate programs in the sciences and mathematics. Graduates from these "Professional Science Master's" programs can use their interdisciplinary training to become highly effective contributors, managers, and leaders in those industries that develop biological products and services: pharmaceuticals, medical diagnostics, biomedical research products, agribusiness, toxicology, and other commercial endeavors.

The Master of BioTechnology Degree program at San José State University combines in-depth, hands-on training in biotechnology-related skills, with MBA-level courses in areas such as management or marketing, while emphasizing team-based problem solving and effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Partnership between SJSU and interested companies will benefit both the institutional parties and the students. Current employees may enhance their technical skills and study MBA-level courses providing a better understanding of business/management concepts, thereby enriching their contribution to operational productivity.

Developing summer internships for the MBT students will provide companies with an opportunity to evaluate a student's aptitude at relevant technologies and their ability to be assimilated into a particular corporate environment.

The courses and curriculum are constantly modified with insight provided by corporate partners and advisors thereby helping the program to respond to the evolving needs of the biotech community.
