Biology Faculty Awarded
Grants
Dr. Julio Soto, Dr. Leslee Parr, and Dr. Sabine Rech were awarded a $142,485 National
Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site Grant. The
grant, titled "Research
by Undergraduates Using Molecular Biology Applications (RUMBA)" will provide
opportunities for students from the Bay Area and beyond to work in research laboratories
in the Biological Sciences
Department at San Jose State University and to hone their
skills as scientists.
Dr. Robert Fowler was awarded a $220,500 grant from the National Institutes of Health
to study "Pathways of Spontaneous Mutagenesis in Escherichia Coli."
Dr. Shannon Bros and Dr. David Matthes of the Biological Sciences Department, and
Dr. Elaine Collins of Chemistry, and Dr. Sami Kuri of Computer Science were awarded
a $50,000 planning grant from the National Institutes of Health Minority Access
to Research Careers Program to assess current and future needs for the integration
of mathematics and quantitative biology into the Biological Sciences curriculum.
